Chess Mastery of the Muslim World?
(Part 2)

By Mubaashir Uqdah
There are other pieces in the chess game. There are the Pawns. The movement of the Pawns is restricted. They can only move forward, straight ahead. This indicates that they do exactly what they are told or are manipulated into doing. Their diagonal attack simply means that they attack us from unexpected angles. Pawns usually catch us by surprise. They do not have the freedom to change directions, to change their plans; that is, to move forward or backward, left or right. This is why in life we refer to people who are not independent or are manipulated as pawns in the hands of those in power who use them in a larger strategy. For instance, the pawns that were used to assassinate Malik Shabazz (Malcolm X) and Dr. Martin Luther King were of these two types; one was manipulated to work against their own self-interest and their own leaders and the other was a willing pawn in service to a bigger strategy.
Pawns are seen as the weakest pieces on the battlefield. However, if the Pawns are used wisely and organized into special forms and structures, they can be tremendous stumbling blocks to an opponent and often the key to victory. Therefore, do not always think of Pawns as a bad thing. Pawns are not always in opposition to the King’s use of them. For example, those men and women of the civil rights movement that boycotted the bus services and suffered to walk long distances to work were willing pawns in the chess strategy used by their King (leadership), Dr. Martin Luther King. Many of the foot soldiers in the Nation of Islam played a similar role in the chess strategy of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad.
The Castle or Rook is another powerful piece in the game of chess. The Castle is a fortress; it is a defensive fortification that is very difficult to destroy and get rid of. It is well understood amongst savvy chess players that the best place for a Castle is on an open pathway, deep within the enemy’s territory (7th rank), from which, future operations can take place behind a wall of protection. One can view the United States occupation of Iraq as the effort to establish a Castle in the heart of the Middle East. Homeland Security views the Muslim community in the United States as a potential Castle well established deep within its territory.
The Castle is a chess piece that moves in horizontal and vertical directions, both forward and backward. Once a Castle is established, it can carry out operations that strike deeper into the opponent or cut across the opponent. To carry out horizontal operations means that it can multiply its operations across the enemy territory. To implement vertical operations means it can intensify and increase the level of sophistication or intensity of its operations to deepen its impact on the opponent.
When Imam Mohammed picked up the American flag and transformed the image and character of the Nation of Islam, he established a Castle in the heart of America for Al-Islam and to the dissatisfaction of those that wanted to attack Islam. When seen by the American public as sober-minded American citizens, we are firmly established like a Castle and can safely plan positive operations to help our people and our country (United States of America). The same is true of our Inter-faith initiatives.
It is also interesting to note that the Castle is also referred to as a Rook. A Rook is a swindler; a cheater, one who obtains something from someone by deception. Often the purpose for establishing a Rook is to carry out covert operations that can be implemented effectively. Most Muslims, not only the terrorists, believe this is one of the main reasons Iraq was chosen as the first major Muslim country to conquer. In fact, the United States administration has made no secret of its intention to use Iraq to spread its New World Order concept of democracy and an impotent, self-containing interpretation of Al-Islam throughout the Islamic world.
Iraq is geographically in the heart of the Middle East and borders all of the Muslim countries that are viewed as enemies of Israel and the West. If the United States can establish a Castle in Iraq, then it can easily, economically, efficiently, and effectively carry out its policies of destabilizing unfriendly Muslim governments and protecting friendly, puppet Muslim governments to the detriment of its people. America and Israel will be able to carry out its mission of transforming and reshaping the calculus in the Middle East in favor of their hegemony. This is why victory in Iraq is seen as non-negotiable by both the Bush administration and those opposed to America’s occupation.
Let me take a moment to discuss this aspect of the chess game further, because many people may not recognize the calculus of concern that many non-democratic countries and governments have about allowing our form of democracy to pervade their society. It is not simply that Islamic values are the antithesis of Western values as our media propagandizes. Imam Mohammed, our community, and the immigrant Muslim community in America have clearly demonstrated that this is not the case. We live quite comfortably in a democratic, pluralistic society and we will even argue that democracy is an Islamic value and most so-called Muslim governments are in violation of Islamic values.
Yet, there are multiple aspects to these governments concerns about adopting America’s version of democracy. I will comment upon three of these concerns. There is democracy as a political, a cultural, and an economic concern. Democracy as a political concern has to do with the people having the power to choose their leaders (using the vote) and having a voice in the activities and policies that affect their lives. Democracy as a cultural concern has to do with people having the freedom of action to do what they want within the law. Democracy as an economic concern involves allowing the West’s powerful international conglomerates to freely compete for that country’s market against those small countries’ businesses.
Politically speaking, many so-called Muslim governments are corrupt. They have a ruling elite, the kind that so many Americans and African Americans detest. They control and dominate the wealth and lives of the citizens and fail to redistribute the wealth in a reasonable and responsible way. This is why you can have such wealth in those countries and yet the masses are so poor and uneducated. These leaders do not want to share power and do not want to be accountable to the people. Most of them would be voted out of office tomorrow if political democracy was in effect.
Culturally speaking, democratic nations pride themselves on providing freedom for their citizens. This freedom protects the rights of those promoting enlightenment and those promoting decadence. Muslims believe in the freedom of the individual, but we do not believe in allowing that freedom to corrupt the society. Muslims do not want the promotion of Hollywood’s permissive values to be protected by law. In effect, Rooks would be established in the Muslim world that can safely and openly erode Islamic moral values, melting the fabric and character of the people, as they have done in our country.
Economically speaking, democracy would allow the West’s mega corporations and big money to set up shop in these nations and compete to dominate their economies. There is no doubt that America is the number one performing economy in the world. Arab leaders know that opening their economies to the West will result in a Western economic grip that would be a stranglehold on their independence. We need only witness how democratic nations have used economics to punish the Palestinians, starve and bribe the Iraqis (sanctions), manipulate the United Nations and threaten the Iranians, to see what will happen if the West is able to secure the Muslim world in its economic clutches.
Here we have an equation where shortsighted and corrupt Muslim leadership fell to greed and failed to liberate the potential of the masses in their societies. Now they are hunted as prey by the most powerful predator in history, who has regime change as a policy for all, except those who willingly submit to their rules of friendship (dominance). These rules amount to political, cultural and economic submission to a New World Order that does not have their best interest in the plan.
These leaders know that their opponents will neo-enslave them to prevent the rise of a competing Islamic civilization. Their fear of the West and freedom is rooted in their knowledge that they would open the floodgate for the establishment of Castles and Rooks that would forever be the base of operations for the undoing of not only their own leadership and power, but the future freedom of their people.
Prominent in the arsenal of the King is the Bishop. The Bishop represents spiritual power. The Bishops are pieces that can traverse the entire battlefield like the Castle, but they do so along the diagonal plane. Why would a Bishop, a piece which represents religious or spiritual authority, be included in a game of war? It is because an opponent who has lost his spirit, motivation or belief in the cause for which he fights, will surely lose the battle.
The Bishop represents more than just religious power. It represents any force that can impact your spirit or emotional commitment to your cause. Propaganda that disheartens you is war upon you. Religion is simply an organized form of spiritual expression. Make a man doubt his G-d and his ability to achieve his vision and mission and you have removed his power. You see the Bishop travels along a diagonal, which is an angle. This is to tell us that an opponent will attack your spirit from different angles and that you must use your spiritual power in multiple aspects and ways (multiple angles) to succeed.
Observe how the Neo Cons are attacking the Muslim world’s spirit. Muslims and Islam are demonized as a violent, barbaric religion and the media gives us examples that embarrass us. They characterize these examples as indicative and inherent in the Qur'an and Islam. They promote mockery of the prophet, seeking to make Muslims ashamed of the Messenger. They spread across television any instances of repression against Muslim women and they frame Islam as the culprit.
The goal is to shame the spirit of the Muslim, to make him/her embarrassed to be Muslim, afraid to Dawah, or stand up for the rights of the oppressed Palestinians. The goal is to shame any non-Muslim for sympathizing with such a backward, oppressive and dangerous religion. The idea is to tame the spirit of the Muslim, to melt us down and reshape the Muslim spirit into the image of the Uncle Tom Muslim or to make us so angry and offended that we become unbalanced, rebellious and irrational revolutionaries. Either way we go it works against us.
Imam Mohammed understands the mathematics. He uses his Bishops to restore spiritual balance. He knows the Shaitan’s strategy is to shake the spirit out of balance to topple it. The Imam’s strategy is to steady the human spirit so that it can stand, walk, run and lift.
Finally, there is the Knight, also called a Horse. The Horse is a symbol of power and the Knight is a warrior with a weapon that rides upon the horse. The Knight represents the fighters, those on the front line of the battle. They use the power at their disposal to support and carry them and they use their weapons to defeat their opponents. Our government and its allies have many knights on the battle field and they have adopted an aggressive policy of making preemptive strikes against any Islamic Knights that would try to prevent her from taking over and dominating their nation by checkmating their weak and corrupt Kings.
Why can Knights jump over the other pieces? Because warriors do not let things get in their way to prevent them from fighting for their survival or nation. The fighters use strength and power to achieve the objective and their ability to hurdle others and change direction (they move in an L-shape) on the field of struggle means they overcome and dodge obstacles in order to compete against the opponent and bring victory to his King and Queen.
